I think Frida Kahlo is a fascinating woman, because of her unique facial features. Her face expresses a strong and sharp look. For this reason, I wanted to create a painting of her with a more soft and feminine expression. I think she’s a big inspiration to many people who work in the fashion and art industry.
Brigitte Bardot really is a beautiful woman. There are a lot of glamour images known of her, but I expressed her more intimately and pure. The dark surroundings give Brigitte Bardot a vulnerable expression. The choice to paint her in an unrealistic way creates the feeling she’s not from this world. In my opinion, this is who Brigitte Bardot is.
Something typical Dutch, but still original. That’s the reason I painted this woman on four separate canvases, like the typical Dutch tile paintings. Every separate canvas represents one tile. This not typical Dutch woman has a strong personality. Her upwards look makes her powerful bone structure more visible. The Delfts blue tattoos shows her freedom.
Most of my paintings are of women. I wanted to create a collection of international women that inspired me. No fairy tail princesses, but strong independent women. Still, I wanted to express their pure feminine beauty without losing their strength. Sometimes we find beauty in faces due to events that happend to us and not because we're born in that way. Looking to those female faces makes me think about their life-time events and how they survived it.
